AppleSac

AppleSacThe idea for AppleSac began as one of the co-founders attended school at BYU Hawaii. He wanted a simple and effective way to carry his PowerBook without the bulk of a big bag, and without the lame look of neoprene.

AppleSac’s headquarters are located below the Wasatch Mountains in Salt lake City, Utah. AppleSac encourages its employees to go out and travel the globe; and they do. When they are home they enjoy Utah’s beautiful mountains all year long—from powdery snow in the winter to long single tracks in the summer.

AppleSacs are without question the most stylish and ergonomically well-designed sleeves on the market. They are designed for Apple users who want to provide protection for their MacBook, PowerBook, or iBook without sacrificing style. Original, efficient, and simple, an AppleSac sleeve is engineered to be used as solo protection, or to be used combined with a briefcase or backpack.

b.happy bags

b.happy bagsAs long time proponents of “just saying no” to paper or plastic, we know the value of a good shopping bag. Unfortunately, the ones we had had ripped, frayed or shrunk to a size fit for one half gallon of milk and a pack of gum. Necessity is the mother of invention—a happier bag was born. After a few trips to the grocery, farmers markets and even Costco, we knew we had to share the joy.

Our goal in producing these bags is to appeal to the people that think you have to don your Birkenstocks to make a wise post consumer decision. Not only does it save a tree or a barrel of oil—it makes your shopping trip a hell of a lot easier. And—it’s much more fun to carry home your cantaloupes in a zebra print bag. We sincerely hope that our bags will help to eliminate the destructive overuse of disposable bags.

Worldwide, hundreds of billions of plastic bags are consumed each year. Less than 3% are recycled; the rest are clogging landfills, blowing down our streets, and threatening wildlife. Because of their negative environmental impact, from manufacturing to disposal, many countries are banning or taxing plastic bag use (as much as 20 cents per bag!). As petroleum based products, the cost of plastic bags will continue to rise, being passed on to consumers. As tax payers, we are also bearing the staggering costs of clean up and disposal, estimated at 5.2 cents per bag.

We believe that each of us can make a difference. Just imagine if everyone took this one small step. Imagine the world without all of that waste—that would make the world a better place.

Elwood Clothing

Elwood ClothingElwood Clothing began in a loft space in downtown San Diego in 1996 after a group of like-minded individuals decided to explore a fresher and more sophisticated direction in the world of denim and cut-and-sew apparel. As their vision melded into one, a team of influential skaters were handpicked to participate in the design, look, and overall feel of the Elwood clothing they wore.

Elwood has since become known and respected as a brand that represents a higher standard of clothing for men and women utilizing advanced garment construction, organic and sustainable materials, ring-spun denims and uniquely dyed wovens. Standing firmly behind the quality of each garment made, Elwood offers a Born On Dating Guarantee, meaning that if any Elwood product should fall apart for any reason, it will be repaired or replaced for free.

Jimi Wallets

Jimi WalletsIn early 2005, we set out to create a new breed of accessory products: products that make sense. Accessory products are generally made with little concern for the environmental impact of the materials used, who makes ‘em, or where they’re manufactured. Cost is pretty much the only concern. So we decided to take a look at these elements and impose some control over them—namely use lower impact materials, avoid sweatshop labor, and manufacture our products locally in the USA. And do all this while making well-designed, high-quality, desirable products that are competitively priced.

We successfully launched the Jimi wallet in 2005, and it’s now in all 50 states, in over 350 cities and towns across the globe, and sold everywhere from the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in NYC to a tiny Scuba gear shop in an Egyptian seaside resort.

We make our products in the U.S. using manufacturers who pay their employees well, offer good working conditions, and are environmentally conscious.

We use recycled and recyclable materials that have a lower impact on the environment. We also donate 1% of our sales revenue to the environment through the 1% For The Planet initiative.

So far so good.

Mountain Sprouts

Mountain SproutsFounded in 2000, in Grand Junction, Colorado, three sisters with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, an idea, and the passion to bring that dream to reality, Jen, Julie & Penny Riekne started a manufacturing company that chose to specialize in children’s outerwear. Several years, many product designs and awards later, Mountain Sprouts has become THE authentic, specialty brand of outerwear and clothing designed just for kids!

Mountain Sprouts understands that in the eyes of a child, every outing is an adventure ... It is our mission to design clothing and gear that encourage families to play outdoors—together. Our complete line of irresistible and durable clothing is created with your child in mind. Mountain Sprouts is the specialty kids’ outerwear brand to trust for their next big adventure.

As a business, we also strive to manifest our beliefs that a corporation has responsibilities beyond the dollar.  We need to create, foster and maintain ethical relationships with ourselves, vendors, and customers.  We believe it is our responsibility to create opportunities, through mentoring and stewardship, that reflect our principles in business and in life.  Finally, we strive to promote a worldly, sustainable industry that “gives back” to the people, the communities, and the environment.

Mt. Borah

Mt. BorahIn 1996, company founder Chris Jackson, an avid bicycle and ski racer, saw a growing demand for well made, functional shorts and tops designed specifically for mountain biking. This led to the creation of the Sawtooth short, which remains one of the most popular baggy bike shorts on the market.

Chris named his new company Mt. Borah, after the highest point in Idaho.

2008 marks Mt. Borah’s twelth season of manufacturing high quality outdoor apparel. It’s also our tenth year of operations in the scenic, friendly village of Coon Valley, in the “driftless region” of Western Wisconsin.

While bicycle gear is still at the heart of the Mt. Borah line, today Mt. Borah crafts functional, casual clothing that lets you enjoy a variety of outdoor experiences in maximum comfort. We use only quality fabrics designed specifically for extended use in any conditions and are proud to say that in 2007, we manufactured over 100,000 pieces, which were distributed to over 500 independent bicycle and outdoor dealers across the U.S.

All our clothing is proudly manufactured in the USA!

Every Mt. Borah design is thoroughly tested and reviewed for quality, function and comfort. You’ll find our products delight your senses, protect you from the elements and perform best when you need them most. Whether you’re careening down an alpine single track on a mountain bike, dodging potholes on an urban commute, roller skiing on a country lane or hiking through the woods, you’ll enjoy being there more when you’re outfitted by Mt. Borah Designs.

Patagonia

PatagoniaBuild the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.
—Patagonia’s Mission Statement

Patagonia grew out of a small company that made tools for climbers. Alpinism remains at the heart of a worldwide business that still makes clothes for climbing—as well as for skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, paddling and trail running. These are all silent sports. None requires a motor; none delivers the cheers of a crowd. In each sport, reward comes in the form of hard-won grace and moments of connection between us and nature.

Our values reflect those of a business started by a band of climbers and surfers, and the minimalist style they promoted. The approach we take towards product design demonstrates a bias for simplicity and utility.

For us at Patagonia, a love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them, and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of our planet. We donate our time, services and at least 1% of our sales to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups all over the world who work to help reverse the tide.

We know that our business activity—from lighting stores to dyeing shirts—creates pollution as a by-product. So we work steadily to reduce those harms. We use recycled polyester in many of our clothes and only organic, rather than pesticide-intensive, cotton.

Staying true to our core values during thirty-plus years in business has helped us create a company we’re proud to run and work for. And our focus on making the best products possible has brought us success in the marketplace.

Treehugger Hammocks is a company of outdoor enthusiasts who care about our environment… well, tree-huggers. We gauge a great deal of our success on how little impact we have on the environment and how much we can do in our community.

Philosopher Paul Hawkin wrote: “The ultimate purpose of business is not, or should not be, simply to make money…The promise of business is to increase the general well-being of humankind through service, creative invention and ethical philosophy.” We agree.

We are truly committed to preserving our natural resources, and we proudly support 1% FOR THE PLANET, the Sierra Club, and the Nature Conservancy.
